"Something horrible happened."で、「酷いことが起こった。」の意味です。 それと"the person in charge"は、「係りの人」って意味ですね。
(*2) There's no use blaming the airport staff. "There's no use V-ing"で、「V-ingしても無駄」の意味ね。
